Soneva Honored with 2023 Terra Carta Seal: Paving the Way for Sustainable Luxury Hospitality

Thursday 30th of November 2023

Soneva, the luxury hospitality icon with properties in the Maldives and Thailand, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Terra Carta Seal by the Sustainable Markets Initiative. The Terra Carta Seal recognizes companies actively contributing to a climate and nature-positive future, aligning with the Sustainable Markets Initiative's Terra Carta Articles.

Soneva stands out among the global winners, showcasing the success of its high-impact, large-scale, company-wide sustainability projects. Rooted in the belief that businesses should serve a purpose beyond shareholder returns, Soneva has consistently set new standards for responsible tourism, proving that luxury travel and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously.

The Terra Carta Seal, launched at COP26 in 2021 by His Majesty King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), is a symbol of distinction for companies championing sustainability. Soneva joins an elite group of 83 companies globally that have received this coveted award.

Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, commended the Terra Carta Seal winners, acknowledging their contributions to creating a more positive future. As we approach COP28, these companies are exemplars inspiring and leading the way for a sustainable future.

Soneva's sustainability efforts, including its Total Impact Assessment (TIA) methodology, have set it apart. As the only hotel brand among the 2023 Terra Carta Seal recipients, Soneva stands alongside giants like Airbus, EY, and Novartis. The TIA assesses Soneva's environmental and social impact, measuring its Environmental Profit and Loss (EP&L) and ensuring year-on-year improvements.

Arnfinn Oines, Social & Environmental Conscience at Soneva, expressed gratitude for the Terra Carta Seal, highlighting Soneva's dedication to responsible tourism. Soneva resorts have been carbon neutral since 2012, and recent investments in solar PV and battery storage reinforce their commitment to renewable energy. The mandatory 2% environmental levy on stays supports the non-profit Soneva Foundation, offsetting carbon emissions and funding global projects such as forest restoration, coral rehabilitation, and community initiatives.

Soneva's recognition with the Terra Carta Seal reaffirms its position as a leader in sustainable luxury hospitality. With ongoing commitments and transformative initiatives, Soneva continues to demonstrate that luxury and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, inspiring others to follow suit.
