The game-changing overwater resort in Noonu atoll, Soneva Jani has recently celebrated the Asia premiere of Children of Shanghai with a private screening of the documentary held at Cinema Paradiso on 17th May 2023. The documentary is narrated by British adventurer Bear Grylls and follows the real-life stories of the first fostered children in China whose lives significantly changed thanks to the Care for Children charity.
The documentary also highlights the story of former professional football player Robert Glover and his wife Elizabeth who moved with their six young children from the UK to China in 1998. There, they found the charity Care for Children – China’s first fostering programme. The film then takes a look into the lives of five children who overcame numerous challenges to achieve success as young professionals. Since then, Care for Children has placed around a million orphans with families.
The exclusive premiere event held at the Soneva Jani property was hosted by Chinese singer-songwriter G.E.M who is also a passionate patron of the charity. She recently donated all the profit of merchandise from her latest album Revelation to the cause. The glittering event took place in the intimate setting of Soneva Jani’s outdoor movie theatre where all ticket proceeds for the evening were donated to Care for Children. Following the hour-long screening, a Q&A session was conducted where open dialogue surrounding human compassion and the importance of coming together was underscored.
Soneva Founders – Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmström are benefactors of the charity and strongly believe that a single leap of faith can change the world, having achieved their shared vision of a sustainable luxury resort in a pristine location with the opening of Soneva Fushi in 1995. Passionate about supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact, Soneva adds a 2% environmental levy to room rates across all resorts in its portfolio to help offset carbon emissions and fund inspiring projects through the Soneva Foundation.
Some of the projects facilitated through the Soneva Foundation include fuel-efficient stoves to vulnerable communities in Myanmar and Darfur, funding clean water projects around the world, creating one of the biggest coral nurseries to accelerate restoration and aid marine life, and many more.
