He makes an example of the role a hospitality industry plays in the community by giving Soneva Fushi’s renowned, Soneva Namoona Baa, as an example. Soneva Namoona Baa provides a blueprint for all Maldivian islands, on how they can effectively manage their waste, and reduce single-use of plastics through investments on water bottling centers, all inspired by the resort’s love for the natural environment.

The official launch of the pioneering Namoona Baa initiative was on February 5th 2020, unveiling a new eco-centro complex on the island of Maalhos, Maldives. As part of the initiative, the islands of Maalhos, Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo in the Baa Atoll vowed to end open burning of island waste, making a radical shift towards eco-friendly waste management.

The CEO reveals future plans of sustainability for later in 2020, where the resort will be opening more eco-centros in Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo. He hopes that with this initiative, the resort will set an example which the rest of the Maldives will follow suite. The CEO and his wife look forward to welcoming guests back to the Maldives soon.
