South Asian Travel Awards 2024: Celebrating Tourism Legends

The 8th Edition of the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2024 celebrated the best in the hospitality sector during a vibrant Gala & Awards ceremony held at Aloft Kathmandu Thamel on September 20. This year’s festivities reached a pinnacle on October 20, 2024, with a special ceremony in the Maldives, where tourism visionaries Mr. Mohamed Moosa and Mr. Hussain Afeef were awarded the "Face of South Asia" honors for their exceptional contributions to the region’s tourism growth.

Mr. Suraj Khan, Vice President of SATA, presented the awards, starting with Mr. Mohamed Moosa, Chairman of Champa Brothers. A recognized leader in Maldivian tourism, Mr. Moosa is celebrated for his deep understanding of tourist needs and his commitment to hospitality. Under his guidance, Champa Brothers has emerged as a major force in both local and international tourism sectors. His diverse business portfolio includes agriculture, fisheries, real estate, water desalination, and financial services, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the Maldives' economic development. Moreover, Mr. Moosa has received presidential recognition for his efforts in environmental conservation, further emphasizing his dedication to the nation’s future.

Mr. Hussain Afeef, Chairman of Crown Company, was also honored for his extensive influence in the tourism industry, which spans over five decades. A true pioneer, Mr. Afeef has played a significant role in the establishment of various resorts and international ventures. He is a key stakeholder in KASA Holdings, contributing to the development of Addu International Airport, and is associated with Champa Brothers, one of the Maldives' largest tourism operators. His influence extends to government advisory roles, including membership on the Economic Advisory Council and serving as Vice Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI).

The event also paid tribute to other South Asian tourism pioneers. Posthumous awards were given to Late Ms. Ambica Shrestha and Mr. Karna Sakya from Nepal, and Mr. Md Shakawath Hossain from Bangladesh, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to their countries' tourism sectors.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees expressed their heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Moosa and Mr. Afeef, recognizing their lasting impact on Maldivian tourism.
