The eco-conscious property of Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives has some big news to share after signing an agreement with Swimsol, a global figure in offshore marine photovoltaics. Under the agreement with Swimsol, it will install a 1.05 MW floating solar park on the premises of the resort, envisioned to be one of the largest solar installations in the Maldives.
The 1.05 MW solar park will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,189 tonnes per year, contributing to a significant drop of 4,39,000 litres of diesel consumption annually. Moreover, it will also aid in decreasing noise pollution by 40% on the island. Owing to the cutting-edge battery backup of the park, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa will be able to completely abandon generation operations between 8 am and 5 pm, instead relying on clean sources of energy.
Apart from offsetting the resort’s carbon footprint, the floating solar platform will help serve another purpose. Its strategic location just above the delicate coral reefs will assist in sheltering the young aqua fauna. This in turn, would assist the coral ecosystem to thrive below the surface.
Speaking on the occasion, Corinna Luebbe, Cluster General Manager of Maldives remarked “We are proud to partner with Swimsol for one of the largest Solar Parks in Maldives. This is in line with IHCL’s ESG+ framework of Paathya with its commitment towards energy conservation and long-term goal of deriving no less than 50% of energy across all hotels from renewable sources by 2030. With the solar park going on stream in 2024, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa will operate with one of the lowest carbon footprints in Maldives.
Speaking further she stated” Taj Exotica’s innovative and rigorous sustainability efforts have earned global accolades, including an EarthCheck Platinum Certification from 2019 - 2022, making it the first resort in the Maldives to achieve the honour.”
