Yesterday, Ministry of Economic Development announced that tenders are open for the development of Gan International Airport in Addu City. Developed using a loan from India’s Exim Bank, the project scope targets many essential areas of the airport.
This includes establishment of a 1.5 Million capacity passenger terminal with ultra-modern features, new control tower and fire station, cold storage and road development. Additionally, the airport will be developed to the contemporary style, equipped with spaces for duty-free, restaurants and lounges as well. Apart from the aforementioned facilities other mandatory improvements will be brought to the airport with a designated parking area among them.
Gan International Airport marks the main gateway to the South of Maldives. Therefore, developing the airport to modern standards, increasing capacity and service quality will help expedite the progress of the Southern Atolls. By the establishment of a 21-centuary airport it will boost the economy of tourism, fisheries and other sectors in the region and inch closer to the administration’s aim of setting up an economic hub in the province. Through this project directly and indirectly many job opportunities will be created, resulting in an economically sufficient community building in the South.
