Since April, first-rate waves have been treating the Tropicsurf team with delights of the summer surf season. It is expected get better with the season approaching in full fledge. Tropicsurf Base leaders, Hamish and Holly are very excited to welsome guests to Aqua Season at Laamu. “From the sheltered lagoons where we provide beginner lessons, to Yin Yang, our most famous wave just minutes away, we’re lucky to have the perfect conditions for any surfer.”
The famed range of therapeutic surf massages are also making a comeback at Laamu. The treatments actively relieve muscle tension after a day on the board. his June, visiting practitioner Napath Theechanthuek from Thailand will offer a mix of therapeutic and relaxing massages specializing in pain relief.
Well, Napath is not the only special visitor expected at Laamu this season. It’s also the peak time of the year when green sea turtles nest on the island’s gorgeous beach. Crawling on to make their nests, these turtles treat the islanders with the magical sight of turtle hatchlings due a few months later. Guests who are lucky enough to witness thousands of baby turtles emerge from the sand and scamper down the beach towards the Indian Ocean carry the experience with them forever. Isha, the turtle biologist from the Olive Ridley Project also stays in touch with guests who sign up to the updates to inform them that the nestwatch cameras have spotted a nest hatching. Isha is expecting more and more nests to add to the current list of 11 throughout the Aqua Season.
Everyone knows that the marine spectacles one witnesses while at Laamu isn’t complete without eventful news from the resort’s marine biology team, the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI). Their most recent activities include being busy with coral spawning studies to an extent never investigated before in the Maldives. Scheduled to happenwhen the full moon shines over Laamu this summer, MUI will be armed with torches, accompanied by guests, to watch on as the most abundant species of coral spawns and naturally repopulates the reef. Mark your calendars for a mass coral spawning event is scheduled to happen on Six Senses Laamu’s house reef in the coming months.
Since school is out for the summer so will the juniors be free to join with the MUI team. They can learn about the wonders of these marine events by learning with the Junior Marine Biology program where experiences and education outside the mainstream curriculum come to life. By focusing on outdoor and hands-on education, it offers a breath of fresh air for any little ones suffering a bit of ‘zoom-fatigue’.
