This Location Might be Home to the Largest Shark Population in Maldives

Tuesday 30th of March 2021

For the past decade, the Maldives has held a strict ban on harming sharks in the Maldivian waters by any means deeming the act as offensive under national law. Over the years, the shark populations have thrived, showing just how important the measures were to protect these universally endangered marine species.

Ringed by 99% water, the archipelago of Maldives is home to a number of different shark species that can be found from the very doorstep of the islands in the topaz lagoons to the deepest waters in the country. Passionate divers from near and far come here to answer their urges to encounter these impressive animals.

Situated conveniently in the undisturbed Lhaviyani Atoll, Hurawalhi Island Maldives is blessed with proximity to many popular shark spotting dive sites in the atoll. The in-house Marine Biologists on the island – Aline and Lara – have accompanied countless guests to these sites, being a part of their memorable encounters with the sharks.

The Maldives having become a sanctuary for sharks, Aline and Lara has planned to conduct a research project in the Lhaviyani Atoll, surveying the atoll for the plausible largest possible shark population in the country. With the help of Baited Remote Underwater Video, baseline data can be collected on the population which can further continue for years to come in order to analyze the stability of the population.

The resort team is excited to announce the news and look forward to sharing more details once the project commences with its guests.
