In a breathtaking display of skill and determination, Maldivian freediver Umair Badheeu has etched his name in the record books, conquering the depths with a mesmerizing dive to 62 meters in the bi-fin category at the AIDA Philippines National Championship. This achievement not only secures a new national record but also surpasses Umair's previous bi-fin record of 60 meters by an impressive two-meter margin.
Supported by Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels, Umair's performance among 14 international participants showcases his unwavering commitment to excellence in freediving. Reflecting on the challenges of transitioning from training in Egypt to the unique conditions of the Philippines, Umair shared, “Adapting to reduced buoyancy due to warmer waters and encountering jellyfish were part of the new environment.”
This marks Umair's third national record, following his outstanding performances in the free immersion category at the Andrea Zuccari World Cup in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where he set records of 62 and 64 meters in October. Free immersion involves divers descending and ascending by pulling a rope.
Umair's switch from free immersion to the bi-fin category for this championship underscores his adaptability and mastery of distinct techniques. Commenting on the experience, he said, “It felt like shifting gears, utilizing distinct techniques, and returning to a more familiar discipline. This dive marks a confident depth for me, focusing not just on depth but also on refining dive times for a more enjoyable experience.”
Umair expressed gratitude for Kaimoo's pivotal support, emphasizing how it provided the freedom to train, focus on honing skills, and achieve new heights in freediving. Mohamed Manih Ahmed, Kaimoo’s Managing Director, lauded Umair's exceptional skill and determination, expressing thrill and anticipation for his continued success.
Having achieved this record-breaking feat, Umair now looks forward to a well-deserved period of rest before gearing up for the upcoming freediving season. Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels, a leading tourism company in the Maldives managing five properties, including Embudu Village and Summer Island Maldives, continues to play a crucial role in supporting Umair's journey in the captivating world of freediving.
