United States Grants $2 Million to Maldives

Foreign Minister of Maldives has announced that United States has granted $2 million to the Maldives from COVID19 recovery. ‘Thanks Secretary Pompeo and Ambassador Teplitz for the USD 2 million in economic support funding announced for Maldives to assist in COVID-19 economic recovery. We need such support and assistance from our partners to overcome this pandemic.’

According the Office of the Spokesperson, $2 million in Economic Support Funding will support the expansion of social protection services led by local civil society organizations and assist Maldives to advocate effectively for COVID recovery policies. This assistance will also include technical support to government, private sector, and financial institutions to support hard hit businesses. U.S. investments in Maldives include more than $30 million in total assistance since 2004.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the U.S. Government has committed more than $775 million in emergency health, humanitarian, economic and development assistance specifically aimed at helping governments, international organizations, and NGOs fight the pandemic. The funding has saved lives by improving public health education, protecting healthcare facilities, and increasing laboratory, disease-surveillance, and rapid-response capacity in more than 120 countries.
