Welcome to the great unveiling of ‘The Tale of Veligandu’ – a glimpse of the past 37 years of the resort. This window provides a collection of some of the most fascinating moments that have been documented through time, dating back to the humble beginnings of the island’s journey in becoming one of the most esteemed resorts of the pioneering Crown and Champa Resort Collection in the country.
In 1984, 17 standard rooms were built on the island named Velugandu, after its local translation of sand bank. ‘Akiri’ or corals were used to build the walls back in the day. All the recreational facilities and dining options on the island were limited to 1 small restaurant, 1 bar, 2 Dhonis, 1 jetty, and less than 50 team members.
Year after year, the resort underwent refurbishment to keep up with the fast pace of the evergreen tourism industry, that took a rocket towards success in the pristine Maldives. A fresh look, sustainable means of operation, innovative technologies, something was always in demand and the island kept on transforming to cater to the needs of the lovely guests whose hearts were stolen by the mere sight of the resort upon arrival. It’s magic however remained in staying true to the authentic Maldivian charm.
Fast tracking to today, Veligandu Island Resort is the proud winner of a number of prestigious accolades, the most recent being titled one of the top resorts for romance in the Asia region at 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
