Villa Hotels Makes An Inspiring Pledge To Protect our Vulnerable Environment

Tuesday 7th of June 2022

Villa Hotels & Resorts planned several initiatives to preserve the environment and work towards a greener #OnlyOneEarth as part of a continuous pledge to protect the Maldives natural environment. On June 3, several departments of Villa Group came together for a large clean-up at Thilafushi Island, recognizing that sustainability begins at the core of the company's practices.

The event, which focused on the harbor and beach areas, aimed to collect plastic and trash to donate as recycling while also raising awareness and encouraging environmental protection on World Environment Day. Thilafushi's clean-up covered 300 meters of the island, with a focus on the beach area to keep debris and plastics out of the water. The total amount of plastic collected on the day was 149.47 tons, which was recycled and donated to WAMCO.

In the days leading up to the event and on the day of the event, the diveOceanus team conducted several dive surveys of the surrounding reefs. The underwater team was ecstatic to discover that the reefs were in excellent condition, with little to no plastic. The event was a success, raising awareness while also setting an environmentally conscious and sustainable example.

In addition, Royal Island Resort & Spa in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll organized a series of events to pledge environmental protection and commemorate World Environment Day. Island clean-ups, a B. Kudarikilu Island CSR project to clean the mosque, educational talks about sustainability at the resort, and tree planting at B. Kihaadhoo were all part of the 'Green Fest' event schedule. Royal Island, Sun Island, and Paradise Island all contributed to each island's greenery by planting a number of trees around the islands as part of the theme of caring for nature and giving back to the environment.

The year 2022 marks a watershed moment in global history, as it will be 50 years since the first United Nations conference on the environment. Since 1974, World Environment Day has grown to become the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people taking part in events to protect the environment around the world. Villa Hotels & Resorts recognizes the importance of environmental protection and pledges to maintain stringent environmental practices across all resorts and implement sustainable initiatives to help preserve and protect the natural environment so that people can live in harmony with nature for a greener future.
