The ‘Total Knee Replacement Surgery’ Program

The ‘Total Knee Replacement Surgery’ program, which is fully funded by the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, commenced early this year. It is one of the many initiatives of the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration aiming to improve and expedite the health facilities and benefits provided to Maldivian citizens. 

This program is conducted in collaboration between state owned Aasandha Private Limited and health service providers; Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), TreeTop Hospital and Medica Hospital as to achieve greater diversity of choice and ease of medical care. 


The first successful TKR surgery was conducted by TreeTop Hospital on 7th July 2019. In a short span of almost 4 months, 100 TKR surgeries has been successfully completed under the program up till today, the 100th one being successfully completed by local surgeons from IGMH. 

The 1st and the 100th patient to undergo the surgery was visited by Vice President Faisal Naseem, to inquire their well-being. The Vice President also met with the medical teams behind the success of the surgeries to congratulate them.
