The "50 Years of Tourism Awards by MATI" ceremony was held on July 17th’s evening at Kurumba Maldives by the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI). This event is a highlight of MATI's celebrations of the Maldives' Golden Jubilee of Tourism. The event aimed to recognize organizations and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Maldives' tourism industry over the last 50 years. His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was the event's chief guest.
A total of 57 awards were presented, including four to the Pioneers of Maldives Tourism and two to previous presidents in recognition of their contributions to the Maldives tourism industry. A committee of industry experts and veterans thoroughly vetted and evaluated all nominations received before selecting the winners.
Mr. Mohamed Umar Maniku, Chairman of MATI, delivered the welcome address, which was followed by remarks from His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Mr. Hussain Afeef, Vice Chairman of MATI, delivered the closing remarks. The event concluded with a networking and dinner event.
Moreover, in recognition of this year's Golden Jubilee of Tourism, MATI has organized a variety of activities, including a scholarship partnership between Chevening and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), the publication of two coffee table books titled "Maldivian Resort Architecture - 50 Years of Island Resorts" authored by Mr. Mauroof Jameel and "50 Years of Tourism in Maldives - the Pioneers, People, and Policies that Shaped the Industry" authored by Dr. Simad Saeed as well as a strong partnership with Parley Maldives tackling plastic pollution and promoting environmental conservation.
