8 Islands Named to Get Brand-New Surf Shacks!

Saturday 22nd of May 2021

Surrounded by 99% water, most of what you can do while in the Maldives is at sea. Well, the most interesting anyways. Across the diverse geographic formation in the chain of islands, world-class surf breaks can be found, some so drool-worthy they attract international champs on a regular basis.

Yesterday, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ahmed Mahloof announced that 8 islands in 6 atolls are to get proper surf shacks, built and operated under the governance of the island and city councils. They are N. Lhohi, R. Rasmaadhoo, K. Thulusdhoo, K. Himmafushi, L. Maabaidhoo, G. Dh. Gaddhoo, G. Dh. Vaadhoo, and Fuvahmulah city.

Many young sports enthusiasts have developed an unconditional love for the waves over the past few years, courtesy to the aged souls who initiated selling the experience to thrill seekers from around the world. Today, while many do it for the sake of fun, among them are potential adventurers who can compete on international levels, with the mere breaks they catch on the waters right outside their backyards. We already have title-winning body boarders and surfers in the crowd!

Minister explained that the shacks will have proper lounging arrangements, will be equipped with surfing and bodyboarding equipment provided by the ministry, and a safe space to shelf the surf boards and boogie boards used by the community on the island. Further, the ministry will coordinate with Maldives Surfing Association and Maldives Bodyboarding Association to plan and conduct training sessions and competitions on the islands in the future.

The local surf community is thrilled with the news, with high hopes of the industry finally getting the attention it deserves. They have been working tirelessly to introduce and harvest a love for the sport, something regarded so highly internationally and yet, so new to islanders despite the ample availability of unmatched surfing spots minutes away from the island shores.
