At Sun Island Resort and Spa, sustainability thrives in the heart of every initiative that is taken up, whether it is a recreational activity offered to guests or an operational arrangement at the back end of the resort. The resort is a place where reconnecting with nature is harmonious to its luxury and abundant freedom, and guests are invited to be as much a part of the innovative sustainable strategies implemented across the island.
Energy saving begins with the everyday tasks such as only washing their towels and linen when needed and reusing and recycling as much as possible. These strategies contribute to water saving as well, further supporting the waste management techniques implemented at the resort. Supporting the resort in maintaining the lush natural environment while being more environmentally conscious, allows guests to immerse themselves in an unforgettable adventure that brings them closer to nature and inspires a deeper connection during their vacation.
The extensive botanical gardens spanned across the expanse of the island act as a sanctury for various migratory birds that take shelter within the vegetation. The island produces 20000 coconuts per month as well as a wide variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs which are picked and served fresh in the resort's restaurants. The green initiative is taken up a notch by the resort group, having introduced a sell-back-to-the-resort concept for team members. They can grow their own produce in a dedicated space provided, and sell is back to the resort for a benefit. The chance to be self-sufficient and while providing for the community gives a wealth of experience and opportunity for resort colleagues.
Having won the award for Luxury Eco Resort in the 2021 World Luxury Hotel Awards is a testament to the resort’s pledge to minimizing their environmental footprint by implementing sustainable initiatives. In order to reduce plastic waste on the island, drinkable water is produced and served in glass bottles throughout the resort, utilizing organic pesticides in the gardens and donating all plastic from the island for recycling in a partnership with Parley for the Oceans – an organization addressing major threats towards our oceans and fighting for environmental protection through recycling initiatives and global projects.
