The private island hideaway, Baros Maldives has debuted a new online section to create awareness about the delicate marine environment of the Maldives and highlight the resort’s ongoing sustainable tourism programmes. In line with its celebrations for Earth Day, Baros reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tourism, having been actively endeavouring in various coral restoration and planting projects from 2006 onwards.
Baros Maldives utilizes a range of techniques to promote coral growth on the property. This includes nursery-like pools, suspended lines in the lagoon and the famed Baros coral cubes and personalized frames bearing name tags and love messages. Guests spending their holiday on the island resort can also first-hand contribute to the coral restoration initiative by sponsoring coral frames. Currently, there are 458 sponsored coral frames situated in the surrounding waters.
As the resort gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary in December of this year, the ‘Baros Underwater Ambassadors’ also known as the Divers Baros Maldives team are bringing their favourite underwater stories to guests, giving in-depth insights into the various sustainability efforts. The newly launched information hub will assist the ambassadors achieve this goal by educating guests on good water practices and disseminating knowledge on sustainable tourism.
The dedicated section will feature a myriad of edutainment content including interesting stories about the marine flora and fauna, characteristics of resident marine creatures like Finny – the black-tipped shark and the natural order of things underwater. Through these stories, it will help to raise awareness of the etiquettes of snorkelling and diving and offer readers invaluable insights on parallels with current sustainability movements such as the circular economy efforts.
In addition to this, the platform will also include useful and practical tips for avid divers and snorkellers helping them to lead their excursions in a more responsible manner. This includes do’s and don’t’s like diving slowly, avoiding touching the reef and marine creatures like Manta Rays which help preserve their habitats and ensure their survival in the long run.
Passionate about marine education, the Baros Underwater ambassadors will also present a diverse range of information on the fragile marine ecosystem itself, underscoring its interconnectedness and the natural balance that can be easily disrupted by anthropological behaviour. The sustainable underwater measures in place surrounding their topics will also be spotlighted in this section.
Guests arriving at the resort can explore these topics further via a plethora of marine activities with the underwater ambassadors. This includes activities like coral cube planting, guided snorkelling tours and diving excursions at the world-class Baros house reef and other exclusive reefs in the vicinity of the resort. Apart from its commitment to marine conservation, Baros Maldives has implemented several eco-friendly practices in-house to reduce its environmental footprint. Some of the steps taken in this direction include replacing plastic straws with paper ones, banning plastic bags and encouraging the use of glass water and refreshment bottles that can be refilled multiple times.
