On 12th April, Housing Development Corporation collected 20 jumbo bags of waste alone from Hulhumalé Lagoon. The government owned enterprise tweeted, asking the public to ‘reduce single-use plastics and to refrain from littering; whether it’s to the ocean, beach, roads, or the neighborhood we live in.’
In Maldives, a country that was blessed with a precious gift from Mother Nature, litter on roads, the ocean and beaches aren’t an uncommon sight. Water pollution is one of the biggest issues in the country with plastic bags and bottles littered by the people carelessly. However, the true beauty of the country is covered by this and in order to protect the marine life, it is important that the waters are cleaned and littering comes to a stop.
Nevertheless, there has been a drastic improvement in waste management in the country. There are more litter bins in public areas such as beaches, roads and parks. It is everyone’s responsibility to make the country a clean, trash-free place.
