Fari Islands’ Ritz-Carlton Maldives Expands Its Eco-Innovation Efforts

Saturday 6th of December 2025

Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands gave an insight into its 2025 sustainability goals, another progressive year at the idyllic lifestyle-based Fari Islands. The resort, which opened its doors in 2021, has made an environmentally conscious design, conservation, and education an integral part of its operations, which formed an example of responsible luxury in the Maldives.

This year saw its naturalist team in the limelight where they launched new initiatives that accessed over 1,000 guests. There was a coral adoption program and a teen-centered coral nursery snorkelling, as well as an immersive virtual reality called Ocean Discovery to enable the visitors to see reef ecosystems in a new perspective. The children programmes were also extended by introducing equipment like fish cameras, hydrophones as well as practical ocean science activities.

One of the brightest accomplishments was the pioneer work of the resort in the UAV-based project of ocean plastic detection, the first project of this kind in the Maldives. The team, which also contributes to mapping plastic accumulation and movement with 84 drone surveys in 2025 and more than 21 hours of airtime, is a continuation of the efforts initiated by Dr. Melissa Duncan-Schiele. The wildlife activity was also recorded by the drones that spotted 17 species among them orcas, blue whale, and ornate eagle rays.

Coral regeneration continued to be a priority and 140 new frames were planted in this year and over 2,500 fragment pieces of coral were incorporated. Restoration was also increased with a new coral sanctuary and nursery experiment.

There was also improved operational sustainability facilitated by higher solar capacity, less waste, digitalisation, and community-based environmental programmes with the local schools.

In the future, the resort will reduce the use of single-use plastics by 80 percent in 2026 and solidify water and waste-reduction strategies. Its sustainability-based guest experiences will keep on advancing the following year.
