Currently in their second year of Green Globe certification, Grand Park Kodhipparu is here to step up responsible tourism by striving to achieve environmental and socio-cultural sustainability. In the vision of becoming the Sustainability Champion, the resort has adopted international practices in an effort to go green. Take a look at some of the sustainability initiatives underway at Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives.
To celebrate Earth Day last year, the resort announced that they have launched a solar power system by Swimsol. Using this system, the island resort will be able to harness solar energy using its extensive solar panels. An approximate of 478,080 kwh of clean energy can be generated yearly, paving way for the resort’s mission to offset its carbon footprint. Through this project, Grand Park Kodhipparu will be able to save up on 150,00 litres of diesel fuel as well.
Waste Segregation
Another sustainable measure implemented at the resort is the waste segregation process. At Grand Park Kodhipparu, wet waste and dry waste are separated and sorted out for recycling and upcycling processes. This enables the resort to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, supporting a greener planet.
Since 2020, the resort is free of plastic water bottles and plastic straws, indirectly contributing to the ecosystems by reducing the amount that ends up in the oceans. Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives features its own water bottling plant, supplying their drinking water in a plastic-free way. Moreover, the resort has also abandoned use of plastic straws in all of its Food & Beverage outlets, creating an eco-friendly experience for guests.
In the midst of the island, located discreetly among the green foliage, find the Herb Garden and Orchid Nursery! With the aim of providing fresh organic produce, the Herb Garden cultivates various products such as peppers, chillies, basil, eggplants and even the red pomegranates. Furthermore, the Orchid Nursery is home to over 600 orchid plants spanning 14 varieties including the popular Dendrobium and Gramathopilam as well.
The sustainable management plan adopted at the resort targets long-term sustainability in five main areas. This includes environmental, socio-cultural, quality, health and safety and promotion and awareness raising. Under this plan, the resort has its very own “Green Team” that ensures effective environmental and sociocultural practices are being implemented and monitored. Additionally, a sustainable manager and a resident marine biologist at the island, will educate guests and staff on the natural ecosystems and conduct conservation and restoration efforts of the coral reefs too.
