As we celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June, take a look into the top luxury resorts in Maldives that have come up with a variety of initiatives for the protection of the environment.
On 3rd June, countries around the world celebrate the World Bicycle Day, acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation. In Maldives, especially due to the one island one resort concept, using bicycles for transportation in the resorts are highly convenient. While reducing air pollution, it also benefits the health of the guests. In Gili Lankanfushi, the overwater luxury villas come with bamboo bicycles for every guest.
Many resorts in the Maldives have implemented recycling at the resort. Six Senses Laamu recycles all organic waste for mulching and converting to organic garden soil. The resort avoids creating any waste in the first place but what little waste created is either recycled onsite or disposed of responsibly. However, taking recycling to another level is the Glass Studio at Soneva Fushi. They ‘upcycle it’ by glass blowing and allowing guests to experience this as a part of their vacation.
Resorts have come up with a variety of unique initiatives for the protection of marine environment. At Six Senses Laamu since 2014, Manta Trust to study the local manta ray population and to educate guests and the local community about the importance and vulnerability of manta rays in the Maldives while Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu joins the nationwide Protect Maldives Seagrass campaign.
