On 4th May, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof announced that an allowance of 5000/- will be provided for national players by the government. This results in a total 1.4 million on national players in the Maldives during the COVID19 pandemic.
“A payment that should be given by us will be provided.” The Minister stated that the government does not provide payment to coaches, instead payment is given to the sport clubs. When questioned why the national players have not yet received allowance, the Minister answered that allowances have not been provided since practices were not being carried out.
According to Mahloof, national team salary is given to 328 players. It is given after the association shares the attendance of the players with the Ministry. The Minister states that the payments these players receive are allowances, not salaries and hence, it depends on the practices being carried out. He further states that the request for allowances were done by only 3 associations and all National Teams receive allowances fairly.
During the press, the recent issue of financial difficulties faced by freelance workers was also addressed. Minister Mahloof assured freelance workers in the country that if there is a possible solution from the government, he would make efforts to make it happen.
