Velana International Airport (VIA) has set a new Air Traffic Movement (ATM) record on the 19th of February 2022, last Saturday.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) revealed the record numbers the following day and they did not disappoint. A total of 839 ATMs were recorded, which included 210 runaway movements, and the rest of the 629 were seaplane movements,
This record was set, breaking the previous month which was set only a little over a month ago on the 2nd of January, 2022.
As of today, Maldives has 35 international airlines which operate in the country. And in order to accommodate the ever-growing number of flights to the small island nation, VIA has expanded with the construction of a new runway terminal. The new runway is currently only used as a taxiway, but it is set to officially begin in Q3 of this year.
