OBLU SELECT Sangeli Earns Green Globe Gold for Five Years of Eco Excellence

Tuesday 3rd of June 2025

OBLU SELECT Sangeli, a luxury resort in North Malé Atoll, has earned the prestigious Green Globe Gold Certification, celebrating five consecutive years of sustainable tourism practices. The award recognises excellence in eco-friendly hospitality, assessed by Green Globe’s global standards covering environmental, social, and economic responsibility.

The achievement was marked at a special island ceremony, where Babli Jahau, General Manager of NSURE Private Limited, presented the certificate. Jahau praised the resort for its long-term commitment, saying it stands as a “true mark of excellence” in protecting the Maldives’ delicate ecosystem.

General Manager Jenni Hartatik said that sustainability is central to daily operations at OBLU SELECT Sangeli. From coral gardening and reusable glass bottles to encouraging towel and linen reuse, the resort’s practices aim to create memorable yet environmentally conscious stays.

A key part of Sangeli’s strategy includes coral restoration, where over 10,000 coral fragments have been transplanted. Despite bleaching challenges, the reefs have shown resilience thanks to ongoing marine protection efforts. An initiative to upcycle ghost nets into handmade bracelets further supports coral projects while engaging guests in eco-awareness.

Other efforts include a biogas plant that processes up to 1,000 kg of kitchen waste daily, producing methane that powers 40% of the kitchen and compost that fertilises landscaping. The Sangeli Muraka Project adds an innovative touch, with underwater cameras livestreaming coral reef life to guest villas and the marine centre.

Blending sustainability with luxury, OBLU SELECT Sangeli offers a tranquil island escape under the all-inclusive Serenity Plan™, proving that responsible travel and exceptional experiences can go hand in hand.
