Yesterday, the new Abu Dhabi funded international airport in Northern Maldives opened. That morning, the first commercial flight landed at Maafaru International Airport. The official opening ceremony took place in the afternoon, which was attended by Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam. Maldivian airlines will operate regular flights between Velana International Airport and Maafaru International Airport.
Maldives already has 13 airports, including three international airports. Government had earlier announced plans to open five new airports this year. However, only a domestic airport on the island of Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaal atoll and international Maafaru airport opened so far. Construction of airports on the islands of Shaviyani Funadhoo, Lhaviyani Madivaru and Gaaf Dhaal Maavarulu is being developed.
