Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, has proudly unveiled its latest artistic collaboration, "Life Energy," a collection of 'Living Paintings' by acclaimed French-Iranian contemporary artist Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar. This body of work was conceived and initiated at the resort’s Fari Art Atelier earlier this year, culminating in a grand event and exhibition that celebrates the union of art, nature, and sustainability.
Distinguished guests, including Sir Mo Farah, rapper and singer Little Sims, and actress Kaya Scodelario, attended the unveiling at the resort’s Portico library. The centerpiece, "Life," a large-scale, site-specific piece, was created using natural pigments derived from minerals, wood, roots, flowers, rocks, soil, recycled pigments, and ground washed-out shells and corals collected from the island. This piece reflects the language of energy and nature, representing a prosperous way of life. Sassan’s commitment to using sustainably sourced wood and linen for his canvases underscores his dedication to harmonizing traditional art practices with nature.
The "Life Energy" series joins Patina Maldives’ permanent art collection, featuring works by James Turrell, Jose Dávila, Cassio Vasconcellos, Hongjie Yang, Hiroko Takeda, and FAHR 021.3. In addition to the main artwork, an exhibition of Sassan’s miniature 'Living Paintings' was opened, showcasing 10 individual pieces available for purchase. These 20cm x 20cm paintings, made from mixed mediums, ground washed shells, and corals on linen, celebrate themes such as eco-consciousness and sustainability, with titles like "Energy in Nature," "Garden of Life," "Soleil Couchant," and "Essence of Life."
The "Life Energy" event series concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Suzy Sikorski from Christie’s Middle East at the Fari Art Atelier. The discussion featured Patina Maldives General Manager Antonio Saponara, art collectors, and patrons, alongside Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar. The panel explored Sassan's creative process, his inspiration from the natural world, and his dedication to sustainable art practices. This series will also be displayed at a private gathering in London later this year.
"Life energy is the secret behind human health. Only by feeling the energy can we understand the connection between our mind, body, and the importance of living in harmony with nature. When I paint using only natural and sustainably sourced materials from our planet, my soul feels truly alive and connected. As beings in a modern yet destructive world, we cannot hope to create a sustainable culture for the next generation without a shift in our approach. Without this necessary change, we continue to destabilize the planetary system we rely on as human beings. The damage to our blue home mirrors that in our societies. As a creative human being, it is my duty today to push forth via my work the understanding that humanity, nature, and progress should and can coexist together,” Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar stated.
"Life Energy" is the third major chapter of "Pathways," a distinguished event series at Patina Maldives designed to stimulate lasting personal transformation. Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar, known for his innovative approach to contemporary art, often explores the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature, emphasizing sustainability and natural harmony. His works have been exhibited globally, earning acclaim for their profound impact and environmental consciousness.
