Soneva resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi, wins the award for The Best Eco-Initiatives in Hospitality at Legend Awards 2020.
Legend Awards, by Departure Magazine, awards resorts working tirelessly to preserve their region’s natural beauty, by finding innovative ways to reduce waste, and reuse and conserve resources. Honorees are not only implementing new eco-initiatives, but educating their staff, travelers, and members of the community on best preservation practices.
The brand launched Soneva Namoona in February 2020 as a major attempt to institute daily sustainability practices like composting into Maldivian life. This initiative was inspired by the Eco-Centro waste recycling program that has long since been in effect at Soneva Fushi. At the Soneva Fushi Maldives, food and organic waste, metals and bottles are chipped, ground down or composted, and turned into things of economic value, such as concrete building blocks and fertiliser. Plastic waste is either recycled or used to create useful new objects.
The eco-initiative began on the Maldivian island of Maalhos, and Soneva plans to expand the Namoona program the islands of Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo. Each island pledged to create an ‘eco-centro’ waste-to-wealth centre that will sort, recycle and reuse island waste, essentially ending the open burning of waste, which poses a health and environmental hazard and damages tourism.
