A catamaran is a type of boat that has two hulls instead of a single hull and it can be sail or motor, but usually have two engines, one for each hull. Although the boat was introduced for fishing, it is widely used for both leisure and sport sailing. Two of the many reasons why catamarans have grown so popular over the years are stability and the size. There tend to be more space stability means safety.

It is said that British adventurer William Dampier was the first to describe the catamaran when he found one in Tamil Nadu, while traveling around the world in the 1690s in search of business opportunities. ”On the coast of Coromandel," he wrote in 1697, "they call them Catamarans. These are but one Log, or two, sometimes of a sort of light Wood ... so small, that they carry but one Man, whose legs and breech are always in the Water.”

This design by Tamil remained relatively unknown in the West for almost another 200 years, until an American, Nathanael Herreshoff, began to build catamaran boats of his own design in 1877. It sailed so successfully against monohulled boats (a boat having only one hull) that they were barred from organized racing.

But this is just one of the magical experiences that awaits. Check out more of Best Dives activities here
